There’s something about Colvin House that immediately slows you down in the best way. The moment you walk through the doors, it feels warm, romantic, and incredibly intimate. Between the beautiful natural light pouring through the windows, the historic charm, and the quiet elegance of the space itself, it’s the kind of venue that makes you feel like you’ve stepped away from the chaos of the city for a little while.
As a wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to venues that feel personal and full of character, and Colvin House does that effortlessly. Every room feels intentional, every corner photographs beautifully, and the entire space creates such a calm, inviting atmosphere for couples and their guests. It’s truly one of those Chicago wedding venues that feels both timeless and deeply romantic without ever trying too hard.

One of the things that makes Colvin House so special is that it does not feel like a traditional ballroom wedding venue. Every room has personality. From the original crown molding and vintage fireplaces to the expansive windows overlooking Lake Michigan, the entire property feels warm, romantic, and intentionally designed for storytelling.

As a wedding photographer, venues like this are a dream to photograph because the architecture itself adds so much depth and atmosphere to the images. There is texture, history, and emotion built into every corner of the home.

The mansion was officially designated a Chicago Landmark in 1994 and remains one of the few remaining lakefront mansions of its kind on the city’s north side.

What I love most about photographing weddings and editorial shoots at Colvin House is how versatile the space feels. The venue can lean effortlessly into a refined editorial aesthetic while still maintaining warmth and intimacy.
Some of my favorite features include:
It is the kind of venue that allows couples to create a wedding day that feels elegant without feeling overly formal.

Colvin House is especially perfect for couples planning an intimate wedding celebration with intentional design and meaningful guest experiences. The space naturally encourages connection and conversation while still feeling elevated and luxurious.
For couples who love historic Chicago architecture but want something softer and more personal than a traditional downtown ballroom, this venue offers a beautiful balance between sophistication and comfort.

It also photographs beautifully year-round. During spring and summer, the gardens and lakefront proximity create an incredibly romantic atmosphere. In fall and winter, the mansion transforms into a cozy, candlelit setting filled with warmth and texture.

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a styled editorial shoot at Colvin House alongside an incredible team of Chicago wedding creatives. While I do not participate in many styled shoots these days, this experience reminded me how inspiring it can be to collaborate with talented vendors inside a space that already carries so much beauty and history.
What stood out most to me was how effortlessly the venue supported every creative direction we explored. Whether we were leaning into softer romantic portraits or more editorial-inspired imagery, Colvin House gave us the perfect backdrop for both.

The light throughout the mansion was absolutely stunning, especially as the afternoon sun moved through the windows and wrapped the rooms in warmth. It is one of those venues where every space feels intentionally beautiful without needing to overcomplicate the design.

Chicago has no shortage of incredible wedding venues, but Colvin House truly feels like one of the city’s hidden gems. It combines historic charm, architectural beauty, intimacy, and lakefront character in a way that feels incredibly rare.
For couples searching for a wedding venue that feels timeless, romantic, and uniquely Chicago, Colvin House is absolutely worth considering.

INTENTIONALLY LIMITED. ARTISTICALLY DRIVEN.
Because your story deserves my absolute focus and creative energy, I intentionally limit the number of weddings I document each year. This ensures you receive an immersive, dedicated experience from day one. While I am a Chicago-based wedding photographer, my work takes me across the Midwest—from the refined lakefronts of Michigan and the rolling landscapes of Wisconsin, to the heart of Illinois and beyond.
If you are planning an intentional celebration in Chicago or a destination wedding elsewhere, I would be honored to masterfully preserve your story..
