How to dress for your Fall Engagement & Portrait Session

Every year I plan my Fall mini’s and clients that I have photographed for years anticipate these sessions. On top of Fall portrait sessions, I am also shooting Fall Engagement photos. My absolute favorite time of year is AUTUMN. You would think with a name like Winter, that the season Winter would be my favorite but no. It’s Autumn. I anticipate this time of year the moment it ends. There is nothing like photographing beautiful clients with the autumn color change surrounding us. The scenery is breathtaking combined with couples who are in love and families that are enjoying this new change of season. So today I wanted to give a few helpful tips on clothing and what to expect and how to be prepared for your Autumn session with Winterlyn Photography.

The biggest question I get from clients is WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR? Usually, for a regular Engagement Portrait session / Family session, I recommend neutrals such as blush, tans, light pinks, faint blues and teals, creams, grays, and whites. These colors always photograph softer and more romantically! However, Autumn sessions work better in earth tones. Earth tones and light-colored clothes tend to add a more casual feel. Colors should blend harmoniously. Multiple layers and light colors will add weight whereas dark colors subtract weight and work best for black and white portraits. Darker colors blend seamlessly into the background placing greater emphasis on the subjects. Remember in the ’80s & early ’90s when couples and families would wear matching outfits to a photo session? Terrible, I know. We’ve learned a lot in the last 20+ years of what to wear and not wear for a photo shoot.

The goal is COORDINATING outfits instead of MATCHING! I also recommend avoiding both of you wearing WHITE as a top. White doesn’t allow for any contrast in your images. Guys, we recommend that you avoid patterns that are smaller than a dime! These small patterns can create strange visual effects on a digital camera. Gals, we recommend that you wear something that flatters the parts of you that you love the most and also allows you to be extremely confident! If you are uncomfortable when you look in the mirror (having to suck in and only like the way you look from one angle), then that probably isn’t the best outfit choice for you. We want you to be really confident in your outfit because we know that you will love your portraits so much more if you’re not worrying about how your clothes fit!

This is true for kids as well as adults! I myself have been guilty of dressing my little ones in clothing that they didn’t want wear, only to have them sulk and cry about it for hours on end. Make sure to wear clothes that are fitted, but not too snug. When clothing is a little too tight, it can show off bulges that you would rather keep hidden! The best piece of advice I can give when picking out your Autumn Clothing is have FUN with your clothing and colors and above all else make sure you and your family are comfortable.
